About Sheryl Scarborough

For MONEY I have written: TV series, cartoons, comic books, graphic novels, magazine articles, Business Plans, Direct Music Marketing letters (as Mariah Carey, MC Hammer and others), Corporate Newsletters, Mens Style (online) Magazine (as managing editor),screenplays (well, okay so not so much about the money there) and Restaurant Reviews (for free food!) Now... I'm writing for love and what I LOVE are young adult mystery novels.

It’s not a “weight battle” this time… but almost as bad. This is a tussle over talent! Stephen King has weighed in on the success of J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer. In case you haven’t heard, he thinks J.K. has talent and Stephanie can’t write worth a darn. Ouch! I know Stephenie has a horde of rabid fans, her very own publicist, amazing book sales and a huge cushion of money to soften these blows. I hope she also has a little mantra/mental tape which she runs, over and over saying: “I do not suck! I do not suck!” Because … Continue reading

This is a Hubble Photo of two GALAXIES who are in the throes of magnetic attraction. I mean whoa… okay? That’s some serious heat. It reminds me of one of my favorite YA books: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Nick and Norah suffered, well, maybe endured is a better word that exact level of attraction and I’m certain that if Rachel Cohn (the author of Norah’s chapters) had seen this photo she would have certainly mentioned it as part of her text. Norah’s simple admission of her attraction to Nick was epic enough to justify this photo. It was a seriously big deal. … Continue reading

I spend a lot of time pondering references to ‘pop icons’ that are too old to be meaningful to the YA audience. I’m sure there are those who would like to debate this point with me by saying things like: maybe a reference the reader isn’t familiar with will pique their interest enough to actually get them to look it up or check it out… (I have a teenager, so let me say: not likely, thanks for playing) or, kids are smarter than you think. (True and for the record, my objections are not to undervalue the intelligence of the YA reading audience — only their life … Continue reading

Wow… okay, you’ve heard me be hard on a couple of books now prepare to hear me GUSH! I’ll start with the amazing first line: “Accidents ambush the unsuspecting, often violently, like love.” This line took my breath away. By the time I was 3 or 4 chapters in I was describing this book to my friends as divine… a gift from the heavens delivered through the talented author Andrew Davidson. And I don’t mean that to take anything away from Davidson. He totally showed up and brought an amazing story to life. Davidson’s language is elegantly simple and beautifully … Continue reading

With all the gloom and doom in the press these days, it’s nice to have something to smile about… this morning People Magazine announced their choice for ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ — Hugh Jackman!! Yeah! I’ll go with that (smile!) Which reminds me… I actually worked with a former ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ — I know you want the details… was it Brad… George… Matthew? Hmmmm? Actually it was Eric… Eric Stromer… Not just a hunk, but a really nice guy as well. I was the ‘ghostwriter’ on his How-to DIY Family book. (Ahhh… men in tool belts. Makes me want to … Continue reading
